Tales from the Hood Custom Dolls and the History of Voodoo

This morning marks a significant day for me as a professional doll collector. I think I just acquired the most  unique doll in my collection. I noticed the dolls about a month ago while researching voodoo dolls on Ebay. Since learning I am a descendant from the Benin and Togo area of Africa I have  been researching about their religion and trying to understand it more. I have also learned that my line of work has exposed me to homes where families may openly practice Voodoo or Santeria..
Much to my surprise, I came across this very creepy yet, familiar looking doll set. At first I could not put my finger on it but, after reading the caption .. I quickly remember  this 90s Horror flick that eventually became a  Urban Hit and today.. considered a horror classic.. produced by non other than Spike Lee the 90s horror flick TALES FROM THE HOOD... WAS A CREEPY RENDITION OF TALES FROM THE CREEP..
And Me, Yes Me,  I  have just acquired this awesome doll set!  I was so luck to run across an OOAK set of slave Voodoo dolls from the popular film.
I watched this listing for a month,  and thought about how I could integrate it into my collection of black dolls. I have so many plans to exhibit these dolls and revisit this horror classic with old friends and young people who may have never seen the film. Take a look at the clip from the classic scene and then a look at my expected dolls. Please let me know what you think about  the artists likeliness of the dolls.  As we quickly approach Halloween.. this is an excellent horror film that explores, politics, police brutality, domestic violence and history..  look for Tales from the Hood on Film at Amazon!
If you have Amazon Prime You can watch free on Starz!

  1. Cathy,
What an interesting find and story. Thank you sharing your story, dolls and the movie clip. I never saw the film Tales From the Hood.

While attending Wayne State University one of the Department Directors/Professors traveled the world to study Voodun/Voodoo. He too have family ties to this rich culture. Robert Martin was his name. I too remember our student travels/exhange study abroad while attending Wayne State University where we visited Salvador Bahia Brazil and we briefly attended a Voodun ceremony. This was in 2001...it was a great experience.

Maybe you can display these dolls and others one year at Sandy's Land Detroit Doll Show. To give some history behind the dolls to the attendees would be wonderful.

Thanks again for sharing. This brought back happy memories for me as well and I will definitely see the movie Tales From The Hood.

    2. They are items used to cast a voodoo spell. The dolls are suppose to be the slaves that worked the plantations during slavery. Many of them where from Benin and Togo and practiced voodoo

Win a Monster High Doll! Froggy Stuff Falling Out!!!!!

I recently entered a contest sponsored by the infamous Froggy Stuff. She is one of my doll craft idols, and so many of us enjoy her creativeness. I was taken aback after reading some of the horrific comments directed to her from angry kids, teens and adults when she ran her last photo contest. I love the fact that Froggy Stuff is kind enough to give away her dolls. This giveaway was unlike any other. She was giving away 26 Monster High Dolls that where unopen! So, people all over the country/world were freaking out! Kids, Teens and Adults flooded her blog and Facebook page eagerly asking questions about contest rules, and when the  winners would be announced.  I thought quietly to myself, gosh if I could only get one fourth of a following, I'd be in happy. I'm no Froggy Stuff, but I'm pretty crafty myself (lol). So In response to all the madness I decided to hold my own Lil Monster High Giveaway.   Note: I will not be giving away 26 dolls, but I will give away 2

Collecting OOAK Dolls by African American Artist

A few years ago when I almost lost my fire for doll collecting(2011). I discovered a doll artist named Tanya Monegut. I loved the sassy hair, the boots..... I had to have one. I felt the dolls where so much like me. It took me months, but I tracked the artist down and then started communicatine with her via email. At the time she did not have any pieces avaliable... I lost track and it took me another year and half before I was able to track her down again on Etsy.com...so 3 years later I have finally found and purchased a doll from this wonderful artist. I must tell you she is nothing short of awesome. The work and craftsman ship is over and beyond..... I love my new couple, but have not decided on any names yet. Any suggestions?
